TN tax free weekend!


2006 SALES TAX HOLIDAY
Begins on Friday, Aug. 4, 2006 at 12:01 a.m.
and ends at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006.

Clothing - $100 or less
School Supplies
Computers with a purchase price of $1,500 or less, not for use in a trade or business

For purposes of this exemption, a computer is defined as a central processing unit (CPU), along with various other components including monitor, keyboard, mouse,cables to connect components, and preloaded software.

Lydia and I will be sure to take advantage of this for all of our back-to-school needs!

Seriously, this is a great move. There are a LOT of our personal discretionary dollars that leave our state because we're trying to save the 9.25% fee that is tacked on top of whatever we purchase. Heck, I might even buy a computer locally that weekend (if I can save up that aformentioned sum.)

Technically according to state law you owe sales tax on goods purchased outside the state as well--as long as you are using them within the state of Tennessee. Because the government has no garnishing power in other states, it is incumbant upon the Tennessee resident to file a Consumer Use Tax on said items purchased outside the revenue jurisdiction of the State.

Note that I didn't say that we actually were saving that tax... just that we were trying to...
