recent things of minor awesomeness

  • Costco's super-giant pack of paper towels no longer has each individual paper towel roll shrinkwrapped for retail sale inside of a giant shrinkwrapper. I wonder what genius figured that one out. Forget the environmental benefit and savings to the manufacturer in materials and incremental shipping cost. Now I don't have to tear into one every time we run out.
  • More flavors for Fiber One bars. Really, I love these for the taste, not just the fibery goodness (don't tell John McEnroe.)
  • Nightshot video cameras, X10 wireless video senders, Picture-in-Picture, a PowerBook, and ustream.tv
  • Scrabulous
  • The fact that I have 90% of the new iPhone features when I updated my iPod Touch with the new generation of software. That never happens.
  • GPS provided by Mr. T
  • Google Alerts
  • Thanks to twitterbook, cronjob.de, net2ftp.com, and e-rice.net, my "status" is everywhere whenever I update Facebook.
  • Sleep
(I told you it was minor awesomeness.)

Oh, and if you're a regular AdamTV viewer, please know that he's going on summer hiatus for a little while. We'll be back to our regularly scheduled programming as soon as possible.

six megabit download speed!

If you're an Internet geek, you're probably not overly impressed that I'm getting this kind of connection speed... until I tell you that I'm sitting in a laundromat outside of Black Mountain, NC!

netflix for purses

I love the name of this website.

Gee, I wonder what else this business model could be extended to??

past its prime

So I'm on the phone right now with amazon.com (yes, they have a phone number) because evidently, they didn't feel like it was enough to charge me just once for my "Prime" membership.

When I was paying bills today, I noticed a random $79 charge from amazon.com on our credit card. I signed up in January and promptly hit the "don't renew" button for my one year membership.

I guess a one year membership isn't a one year membership sometimes?? Caveat emptor.

blogging at 60 mph

So for my work, I've been given a Verizon Wireless broadband card. Now, wherever there's cellphone service, I'm online.

Unfortunately, the #1 reason I got this - corporate VPN - doesn't seem to be working. I'll give it a few more attempts, but we may have to try another one before too long. Verizon has a 30-day trial period... and I may need it.

i finally get RSS readers

I used to not "get" RSS readers... I mean, why not just click on the page you're interested in. That is, until Google Reader.

The thing that made it all make sense is the "Mark as Read" button. Now, instead of going to each blog in succession, looking to see what's new, I just look for unread stories in the left column of links. Saves time and effort. Love it.

finding the deal

Lots of folks know that I have a penchant for locating good deals on everything... finding coupons, sales, closeouts... all sorts of cheap stuff. I'm not entirely sure why that is. Part of it is that I'm wired that way: to be observant and to exhaust resources before making a purchase. The other part... I know how to use the intarweb.

A new site that may soon become a favorite is wireddeals.com. This site aggregates the postings in the "hot deals" forums of my top favorite site fatwallet.com and slickdeals.net. It's free to register, and registering allows you to sort the deals from both sites to see which ones are getting the most approval votes... usually the ones with the best discount or rarest availability.

Speaking of rare availability, one of my co-workers is looking to procure a certain new game console for his family for Christmas at its retail price. Any leads would be appreciated!
